The Lost Wallet.

I spent this morning with Josh, Trina, and Viola. The three kids were lounging on the blown up air mattress in the living room and were ready to watch a movie. Danny and Kendra were getting ready to leave for a few hours. As they were heading out the door, Danny ran back in to look for his wallet. He doesn’t misplace it very often, but when he does, he does it well!

The two older kids looked in his car - under the seats, in all the pockets, the center console. Everywhere. Viola and I looked under the blankets and pillows in the living room and then helped search the office.

After about ten minutes, Danny and Kendra had to leave. The two older kids came back inside and were ready to make a game plan.

Where could that wallet be? Josh and Trina both made lists of places it could be and diligently searched before checking places off of their lists. Viola ran close behind the two older kids and was excited to look through things.

After declaring that the wallet wasn’t anywhere, the four of us went back to the car and searched it again. And again. And again...

It wasn’t anywhere! I got frustrated. I usually find things that I’m searching for. The four of us sat back down and tried to work out another game plan. What else could we do? Trina made one more quick search of the house before plopping down in my lap, disgusted at the situation. Josh continued to brainstorm places it might be. And Viola, blissfully ignorant of the situation, enjoyed sifting through blankets and pulling them over her head. At 21 months, she was allowed to be silly while we were intently searching.

No wallet. All that searching, and for nothing.

Do I search for God like that? Am I ardently seeking Him with the amount of focus and dedication and drive that I had while searching for the wallet?

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Matthew 14:44-46
